4 of 5 Cuttlefish Bone for Direct casting September 3, 2010
Reviewer: Vieux Carre Jewelers from New Orleans
this product is below the cost of other vendors similar items. The quality is superior in that the pieces stocked by Rosenthal are larger  than others. It is easy to  make 3-piece moulds with these  bone pieces compared to Rio Grande , for instance that offers what are considered small pieces. It should be noted that Rosenthal's are medium to large bone pieces .
The process itself can be expedited and more safely  carried out if you will use heavy paper tape  to bind the two halvess as binding wire  isn't  conformable to the degree necessary for  good holding. One piece with a flat back can be cast if you  carve your design into one side/one piece of bone and then bind it to a firebrick or  flat slate, etc then pour the metal into  a well gated  and sprued  bone.Success is easy with this direct casting method compared to delft clay or sand, as the learning  curve requires a great deal of trial and error.
